Evacuating children under 18 requires a higher duty of care. So, what if a student refuses to evacuate during an emergency?
🟠 Ask the student why they are refusing to leave. If you can understand their reason, it will be easier for you to help them
🟠 Offer reassurance to keep them calm
🟠 Clearly explain the situation and why it is important to evacuate
🟠 Ask the student again to leave. Be clear and commanding
🟠 Ask the student to follow you. Reassure them that they are being taken to a safe place
🟠 Guide the student out by the hand or elbow
🟠 As a last resort, you may need to use force to assist the student leave. If this occurs, it is best to have another adult with you and to report the use of force to the Chief Warden so that a restrictive practice report may be lodged
