An EWIS (Emergency Warning and Intercommunication System) is a crucial tool for alerting individuals of imminent danger, facilitating timely evacuations, and potentially saving lives. However, what if your EWIS is not accessible or becomes ineffective during an evacuation? We’ve provided 6 steps below:
- In preparation for an emergency, ensure those needing access to the panels have access to the 003 key and the space where the panel is located.
- Ensure the outcomes from the panel’s monthly testing are reviewed and that all persons needing to use the panel are trained in its use.
- Follow pre-established evacuation protocols in your emergency response plan, including designated evacuation routes, assembly points, and emergency contacts.
- Utilise alternative warning methods to alert those you are evacuating, including loud verbal announcements, PA system if available, loud hailer, whistle signals, hand signals, or any other available means to alert others in the vicinity of the emergency and the need to evacuate.
If established and aligned with your organisational protocols, use social media announcements and text messages to provide crucial information on evacuation procedures and alternative routes.
- Maintain visibility by wearing your Emergency Control Organisation vests, hats or caps and carrying flashlights, especially in low-light conditions.
- Assist vulnerable individuals, including children, the elderly, or people with mobility impairments, in navigating evacuation routes and accessing safe areas.
