What if… your exits are obstructed during an evacuation?

by | 20 Aug 2024

Having clear and unobstructed exits in an emergency is imperative to ensure personnel safety. However, knowing what to do if the exit becomes blocked is just as crucial.

Here are some steps to take if your exits are obstructed during an evacuation:

  1. Remain calm to ensure you can think clearly and constructively.

  1. Assess the situation to determine what is obstructing the exit so you can formulate a plan.

  1. An alternative exit should also be clearly outlined in your evacuation plan. Assess if this route is accessible and use it to exit, if it is safe to do so.

  1. If the alternate exit is also blocked, check for windows, secondary doors, or other pathways that could lead to safety. Be cautious when attempting to use alternative exits to avoid injury.

  1. Use emergency equipment such as fire extinguishers to clear a path or a torch to signal for help if available.

  1. If you have a phone or other communication device, contact emergency services to inform them of your situation and location. Communicate the situation clearly and calmly.

  1. If evacuating is not immediately possible, seek shelter in a safe location within the building and communicate your new location with emergency services. In some cases, it may be safer to stay where you are rather than attempt to navigate through dangerous conditions.

  1. Listen for instructions from emergency services. They may provide guidance on the safest course of action.
