What if…a student is alone during a lockdown?

by | 20 Aug 2024

Special circumstances may cause a student to be alone during a lockdown. For example, they may have gone to the bathroom or been late to class when the announcement was activated.

If a student finds that they are alone during a lockdown, the following should be considered:

🟠 The student should move to the closest building if safe and possible to do so

🟠 The student should find a safe position where they will be UNSEEN and UNHEARD

🟠 If the student is young (i.e. early learning or junior school age), the teacher or teacher’s aid may consider moving themselves to that space immediately upon the lockdown announcement if it is safe to do so

🟠 Roll checks and warden sweeps should be undertaken to ensure everyone is accounted for, and to identify those needing assistance

🟠 Both staff AND students should receive regular training and participate in regular drills to ensure all persons are educated and prepared for lockdown scenarios

🟠 At the completion of the lockdown or lockdown drill, a full debrief should take place to identify what was managed well and any areas for improvement
