What if… emergency services arrive and they are not able to assist with evacuating?

by | 19 Aug 2024

In an emergency, our reliance on emergency services is instinctive and often crucial. However, there may be instances where emergency services need to focus their attention on the immediate incident, and they may not be available to assist with your evacuation, leaving your organisation’s Emergency Control Organisation (ECO) to continue with the evacuation process. Therefore, it is essential to be prepared and know what steps to take if an evacuation becomes necessary and emergency services need you to manage this process.

Here’s what you do:

🟠Refer to your Emergency Response Plan (ERP)!

🟠 Nominate the Chief Warden to manage the evacuation and delegate tasks in accordance with the ERP and their training

🟠 Gather essential supplies, including an evacuation kit with non-perishable food, water, medications, first aid supplies, torch, batteries, and communications devices

🟠 Utilise local resources and organisations that may be able to assist

🟠 Help vulnerable people evacuate if it is safe to do so

🟠 Keep open communication with emergency services, providing regular updates on the situation
