What if… a student wants to go back into the classroom during a lockdown?

by | 20 Aug 2024

If an evacuation is required and the school is locked down, it is important to remember the following:

🟠 The safety of all personnel, including students, is the top priority

🟠 All personnel should leave promptly during an evacuation

🟠 Teachers should direct and accompany their students to the assembly area(s)

🟠 Wardens are required to do a sweep to ensure all persons have evacuated

However, what do you do if a student wants to return to the classroom once the area(s) has been locked down?

🟠 Once evacuated it is important that no one re-enters the evacuated area(s) to ensure that all persons remain accounted for, cleared areas do not need to be searched again and all persons remain out of immediate danger

🟠 If a student advises that they have left something behind and want to go back into the locked-down area to get it, they should be instructed not to go back into that area and continue moving to the assembly area

🟠 A cross-check at the assembly area is required where wardens report what areas are cleared, and a roll call of all personnel is completed. If a student is missing, this should be identified during the roll call process at the assembly area and reported immediately to the Chief Warden
