What if… I cannot lock my door during a lockdown?

by | 20 Aug 2024

If you find yourself in a position where you need to lock down but cannot lock the door, here are some steps to follow:

🟠 Similarly to one of our previous posts, during a lockdown the ultimate objective is to be UNSEEN and UNHEARD to ensure the threat remains outside

🟠 If you cannot lock the door, close the door and move away from the door

🟠 Secure alternate entry points including windows, block off and reinforce other access and entryways

🟠 Stay calm and remember the lockdown process as outlined in your emergency response plan:

  • Activate the lockdown announcement
  • Move into the closest safe space
  • Turn off the lights
  • Close doors
  • Lock doors if possible
  • Close windows and blinds (if possible and safe)
  • Sit below the window line and out of sight of windows and doors (where possible)
  • Turn phones off
  • Remain completely hidden, quiet and still
  • Wait for the Chief Warden or police to provide further instructions. Remain in lockdown until this point
  • When a lockdown is completed, sweep the buildings to ensure those that were in lockdown are aware the lockdown is complete, identify any persons needing assistance, and account for persons
  • Debrief the process and provide trauma counselling to those requiring it

This specific survey focuses on lessons learnt from incidents over the last 12 months, and takes approximately 10 minutes to complete.
